But while the Hollywood movie depicted Wuornos as a victim of her circumstances, her long criminal history of assaulting men is inexcusable. As a little girl, Wuornos never met her father. He was in prison for sex crimes against children when she was born, and he later hanged himself in his cell. When she was four years old, she and her siblings were abandoned by their mother and left to live with their grandparents in Michigan. By the time she was 11, Wuornos was already exchanging sexual favors for food, drugs, and cigarettes at school. She did once say that her grandfather beat and sexually assaulted her while she was living with him. […]

Strikes, Boycotts, and Outages Mar Amazon Prime Day

Prime Day, which began Monday, is one of Amazon’s biggest promotions of the year, when the retailer offers deals to subscribers of its Prime service. This year, some Amazon workers in Europe are striking during Prime Day, hoping to draw attention to working conditions like proposed cuts in wages and health benefits. In solidarity, some consumers have been boycotting the company and its many subsidiaries, like Twitch and Whole Foods. Nearly 1,800 workers went on strike on Monday in Spain, where the planned protest was first conceived as a way to fight pay cuts and restrictions on time off. But workers in Poland, Germany, Italy, France, and England are also reportedly joining the call for a transnational strike around Prime Day. The unions representing warehouse workers involved in the strike are Comisiones Obreras in Spain and Verdi services union in Germany. Prime Day is a bit of a misnomer, as […]

You Can Open A Wine Bottle With Just About Anything…Including A Blowtorch!

It’s basically the end of the world if you need a glass of wine but can’t find a bottle opener. Okay, so maybe I’m being a bit dramatic… But it is pretty terrible! While you could open your bottle with a key or a shoe, if you have a blowtorch just hanging around your home, this hack is quick and probably way more fun than any other trick you’ll try… How satisfying is this?! YouTube / DaveHax It might not be the most useful hack around… But it’s still pretty fun to watch and play around with! Read more:

Ashton Kutcher Quietly Saved 6,000 Children From Human Sex Trafficking

Whenever we think about Ashton Kutcher, most of us tend to think about all of the awesome roles that he has played over the years. What some of us do not know is that he is in the process of playing his important role yet and it has absolutely nothing to do with the big screen or the small screen. He is using his wealth and influence to assist people who would otherwise never receive the help that they so desperately need. It may surprise some of our readers to learn that Ashton Kutcher has taken a leadership role when it comes to the anti human trafficking movement. While some might be aware of the entrepreneurial pursuits that he engages in or the investments that he has made, it is this work that is clearly the nearest and dearest to his heart. He will dedicate his acting press junkets to […]

Teenage Athlete Shares Completely Heartwarming Moment With Her Grandpa On The Court

As a child, one of the greatest joys of being a student-athlete was looking into the stands and seeing my family there to cheer me on. Not only were my mom and dad cheering me on from the sidelines, but both sets of grandparents were there, too. And whenever I stopped to listen, my grandpa would always give me valuable advice that I still use to this day. While it’s important to recognize our own success, it’s also important to remember that we couldn’t often achieve such greatness without the advice of our elders. Thankfully for this Iowa teen, she always took her grandfather’s advice to heart and during a recent sports career accomplishment, she took the time to honor him in the sweetest way. Before every game, Nicole Buch takes the time to talk out game strategies and plays with her grandfather Leonard. In all her years of playing […]

Her Grandma Gave Her A Cookbook From The ’50s, And The Recipes In It Are Nuts

We think we have it all figured out these days. We use our technology to help us find places that we’re unfamiliar with, we think our music is the best, and we feel that the foods we eat today are far superior to those eaten in the past. Well, this girl decided to test out that theory. She received a cookbook from the 1950s and wanted to try out some of the recipes. The results were so weird. Well, maybe we were right about the food thing. These recipes look peculiar to say the least (but I bet there’s some culinary gold in there). Read more:

This 8-Year-Old Boy Picked Up A Banjo And Absolutely BLEW Me Away!

What This Guy Does With A Whale Carcass Is Disturbing…And Really Dangerous

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTBT_ATF’); }); Whales are some of the most majestic creatures that Earth’s oceans have to offer. They’re also some of the biggest animals on planet Earth. When a whale dies (as all things do), they tend to leave a rather large corpse behind. Due to their massive size, it can take a while for them to decompose in the ocean. The carcasses also tend to float. Because of this, it’s common for sailors to come across them every once in a while. Typically, they just pass by the dead creature and get on with their business. However, the guy in the video below is clearly not most people. How he decided to commemorate a dead whale he came across will probably make you cringe… I guess if I had to sum up the current state of humanity using just one video clip, it would be this one. I […]

Watch As This Cat Tries So Hard To Be Fierce…But Is Totally Cute Instead

If there’s a classic example of predators and prey, it’s cats and birds. Our feline friends really love to hunt down anything with feathers. They view bird as their natural enemies, with outdoor cats killing millions of birds every year. Our indoor kitties get to indulge their predatory instincts by watching out the window, and they sure can get excited. That’s the case for Charlie, who loves to sit and “hunt.” I don’t know how successful he would be outside, though, because he does something that’s both strange and cute. I know people talk to themselves all the time, but this is the first time I’ve seen a cat do it! Read More: These Two Cat Siblings Are Adorable, But There’s Something That Makes Them Unique Well, Charlie, you can’t eat the birds, but it looks like you’re having a ton of fun anyway. This Beautiful Christmas Tree Isn’t A Tree At All…When You Zoom In, OMG

In 2014, the Summer Youth Olympics took place in Nanjing, China. While typically summertime musters thoughts of swimming, sunbathing, and ice cream, this incredible performance at the games brought about memories of Christmas. The towering tree display lit up the stadium filled with thousands of viewers…but when you see what the glittering gem is really made of (hint: it’s not evergreen or string lights), you’ll be speechless. Not only is that incredibly impressive, it’s also amazing how talented the acrobats are. The beautiful shapes they are able to create in the sky are really quite striking. Have you ever seen anything like this before?! Read more:

Want To Be Pushy And Rude To These Baristas? It’ll Cost You, As It Should.

Anyone who’s worked in fast food restaurants or retail stores before knows all too well that customers often forget that the employees behind the counter are people, too. If the usually crappy pay isn’t enough to make you quit these types of jobs, the rude, demanding customers will definitely do it. Politeness seems to go right out the window for many when shopping at the store or ordering a drink. That’s why one coffee shop in Roanoke, Virginia, decided to put more value into being polite last year. Austin Simms, a barista at CUPS Coffee & Tea came up with a great way to encourage pleasant interactions by informing patrons that they would have to pay more for a cup of coffee if they forget to use their manners while ordering — and it was definitely a hit. What I love about this idea is that it reminds us to […]

Apple Books isn’t solving one of the biggest problems with iBooks

Blink and you'll miss it: Apple spent less than a minute introducing its revamped Books app last month. Image: apple, youtube Dear Tim Cook: Do you even read books, bro? Now that iOS 12 has been released in public beta, non-developers are getting their first look at the next-generation operating system for iPhone and iPad. And one of the most anticipated aspects of iOS 12, at least for an e-bibliophile like myself, is the Apple Books app, formerly known as iBooks.  Hands-on previews with Books have done the rounds already. But they all looked at Apple’s built-in library, which is minimal. I couldn’t wait to see how it handled a real reading situation, with a serious pre-existing collection — especially given that I’d had troubles with iBooks and my 1,600-plus e-book library in the recent past. So I downloaded the beta, fully aware I’d be dealing with bugs.  SEE ALSO: […]

Cool Anti-Gravity Tank In A Koi Pond Gives Fish An Awesome Observation Deck

The life of a pond fish doesn’t seem like it would be all that interesting. These fish hang out in the same old ponds day in and day out. They see the same rocks, the same weeds, and the same algae. Nothing changes. So to spice up the lives of his aquatic friends, YouTuber TCHelmut built what he calls an “anti-gravity aquarium” in his koi pond that the fish can use to get a nice view of the surrounding garden. As you can see in this video, it’s pretty incredible. It’s fascinating to watch the fish swim around in their unique tank — and don’t worry! These critters are able to get in and out of the tower with ease. They seem to love it! Read more:

Girl Screams And Curses At Caretaker Because They’re Late For An iPhone Appointment

With the holidays just days away, tensions are probably at an all-time high as you rush to the mall to get last-minute stocking stuffers. But because everyone and their mother is doing the same thing, there’s no chance you’ll make it in and out in a few minutes. One disrespectful teenager knows a thing or two about that. While waiting in line for food at her local mall food court, she began having a holiday meltdown because of her iPhone. She was recorded screaming at her caretaker after realizing that she was going to be late to her appointment at the Apple store. As the ungrateful young woman’s voice reaches booming levels, bystanders can’t help but stop and stare. This man deserves a medal for remaining so calm and collected. The girl? She deserves to be grounded until the end of time. SHARE this video with your kids or grandkids […]

Lifeguard Rescues A Screaming Boy Seconds Away From Drowning In A Dangerous Rip Current.

When lifeguard Joby Wolfenden-Brown from the charity organisation RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) heard cries coming from out at sea, he jumped into action. The screams were in an area of very strong rip current, so he paddled out as fast as he could on his board to investigate. What he found was incredible. There was a little boy in the water, only seconds away from drowning. He quickly got the kid onto his board and took him back to shore where he could be attended to. You need to see this rescue for yourself: (Source: RNLI) The RNLI organization wants people to know what to do if ever in a similar situation. If you’re stuck in a rip current, then do not panic or swim against the current. What you need to do is to hold onto your flotation device and raise your arm to signal for help. Remember […]

Neighbors Complained About Her House, So These People Did Something Awesome

Many people think that they are helping the elderly by donating money to charities or volunteering at local food drives. While these are excellent displays of solidarity, more direct acts of kindness are usually the most effective. With that in mind, these people got their hands dirty when one of their neighbors needed help. A 90-year-old woman named Agnes turned to her neighbors when she found herself in a bad place. She was facing steep fines because her house was deemed “too dirty,” and she was told that the government would take action if she didn’t clean up. Luckily for Agnes, some kind people came to the rescue. (via Wimp) Who could possibly fine her now? Never underestimate the generosity of strangers! Kudos to these people for helping out a woman when she needed them most. Read more:

If You Prefer Your Seafood Fried, These Delicious Potato Shrimp Bites Are For You

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTBT_ATF’); }); We all have a list of foods that we’ve never tried, or that we’ll never try again. At the top of my list is an entire category: seafood. I’m not sure if it’s the fishy smell or the slimy feel of sea creatures, but I’ve never found seafood of any kind to be appetizing. I will however, cook it for my family, as long as they remain at least 15 feet away from me while they eat it. Despite my unfamiliarity with the taste of seafood, one thing I know for sure is like any other food on the planet, it tastes much better when it’s battered and fried. These potato shrimp bites look so delicious, that I might even consider giving them a try. You can’t go wrong with a recipe that includes my favorite starch, potatoes. Speed Eating Champion Kobayashi Takes On A Hamster In A Cute Competition.

Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi has destroyed heaping amounts of food over the years in numerous competitions. For example, he once ate 110 hot dogs in 10 minutes and smashed a world record when he ate 97 slider-sized hamburgers in 94 seconds. Now that’s impressive! But we think he might have finally met his match. This tiny hamster challenged Kobayashi’s eating talents to a “hot dog” eating competition. The video below shows the pair going head to head, starting of course with intense, hot-dog-eating-competition-worthy music and a couple tight shots of Kobayashi and the tiny hamster preparing for battle. Get ready for some intense action! (Source: HelloDenizen) To be fair to Kobayashi though, that hamster was clearly cheating by not swallowing. Read more:

Fishermen Think This Shark Is Theirs. Hungry Sea Lion Says Otherwise.

When these fishermen were cleaning a recent catch in Victoria, Australia, they probably didn’t realize that they’d be the ones hunted next! After catching a mako shark out on the water, the men brought it back to a boat ramp in Port Fairy while another family watched. That’s when they noticed a curious sea lion that wanted their prize for itself. Alhough they cut off a piece and threw it into the water for the hungry visitor, it clearly wasn’t going to be satisfied until it got the whole damn thing — even if that meant terrorizing these poor guys in the process. “GIVE ME DA FOOD.” Read More: This Family Just Invited A Few Of Their ‘Deerest’ Friends Over For An Adorable Lunch I think the takeaway here is that when a sea lion wants your catch of the day, it might be a good idea to just hand […]

iOS 12 beta hands on: Serious upgrades to security, speed, and smarts

You can try iOS 12 now as a public beta, but it's still really buggy. So maybe don't. Image: vicky leta/mashable iOS 12 doesn’t officially come out until this fall, but you can try it early… if you’re courageous enough. As with previous versions of the software, Apple has made iOS 12 available for download as a public beta so users can try it out, familiarize themselves with its many new features, and help report any bugs that may have slipped through the cracks. SEE ALSO: iOS 12 fixes the iPhone X’s horrible screenshot problem Though the public beta of iOS 12 is mostly stable, it’s not final code reflective of what’ll come in a few months, which means some features don’t work properly, and it still crashes here and there. He Saw An Enemy And Shot Him. The Next Day, Something Heartbreaking Happened

The Battle of the Bulge was the last major offensive attack by German soldiers during World War II. The surprise attack caught Allied forces completely off guard and caused the Americans to suffer more casualties than they had in any other confrontation during the war. The tired soldiers in the battle could see the end of war in sight, but their jobs were far from over. While most modern history books note the key events of WWII, one thing that many fail to include are personal stories from those that experienced the war themselves. Joseph Robertson was an infantryman in the U.S. Army during the Battle of the Bulge, and years after his service, he could still recall one night when he was left with no choice but to shoot a young German boy. Below, listen to Robertson recall the events of that tragic night that he deemed the saddest […]

Adult Corgi Teaches His Little Puppy Friend How To Sit In The Cutest Way

The best way to teach someone how to do something is to show them exactly how it’s done. Zeus the corgi understands that all too well, which is why he took a very hands-on approach when it came to teaching his puppy friend how to sit properly. In case you don’t speak dog, this is how their conversation went: “No no no little guy, that’s not how you sit. Let me show you how it’s done. Chest up, bottom down, like so…” *Puts paw on butt.* “There, now you get treats!” The tiny legs of these two darlings push the cuteness off the charts! Read more:

Be Careful When Dousing Raw Fish With Lemon Juice…Things Can Get Pretty Intense

When working with raw meat and fish, it’s helpful to have a strong stomach. After all, the smell and feel of raw food can be a little unpleasant. On top of all that, things can get pretty freaky when knives are out in the open. But some strange culinary happenings are a cut above the rest. Take what can happen when you season fresh meat with salt, for example. We know that madness quickly ensues when frog legs and salt come together, but did you know that the same thing can happen when you flavor raw fish with lemon juice? In fact, that reaction might be even scarier. See for yourself in the bizarre video below. (source: Carmel S) The movement stopped as soon as the dead fish’s muscles used up all remaining motor neurons, but seeing it happen is still weird. I think I would just call it quits […]

But through it all, Griffin was determined to get back on her feet, even making a promise to God that she’d pay it forward when she was able — and that opportunity came years later in 2017. When Griffin learned of a local homeless shelter closing that spring, she knew it was her chance to help those less fortunate. Behold, The Beautiful, Majestic Horse…Who Farts While It Naps

If you’ve ever met a bona fide horse person, you know that they think the world of the majestic creatures. To them, they aren’t just animals — they are partners, and horse people care very deeply for their equine friends. When a horse is mentioned, a starry-eyed look might wash across a horse lover’s face. They see these animals as infallible. But…they have to know that horses fart while they sleep, right? There Are Plenty Of Bad Airline Stories Out There Now, But This One? Pure Cuteness

Most pilots become so tied up in their jobs that they never really get the opportunity to get to know their passengers a little. Understandably so, since they have a lot to focus on to ensure that passengers get from point A to point B safely. As is the case with almost every multi-million dollar business, customers and patrons are often nothing more than numbers or statistics. But Captain John Ritchie makes sure his passengers always feel special. Over the course of his 20-year career as a pilot for Southwest Airlines, Ritchie has been keeping close track of his passengers in hopes of one day celebrating a huge milestone. That day just arrived! If You Drive Over These Rumble Strips On The Highway, Something Awesome Happens

Normally, when you drift to the curb of a highway, it’s bad news. You’re jolted back into the lane by the terrible vibrations and noise of the rumble strips. But just west of a small town in New Mexico, there’s a road that everyone looks forward to for just that same reason. While there are some pretty spectacular views, the grooves in the road are what people travel to it for.
