How the Internet changed the way we read

As a professor of literature, rhetoric, and writing at the University of California at Irvine, I’ve discovered that one of the biggest lies about American culture (propagated even by college students) is that Americans dont read. The truth is that most of us read continuously in a perpetual stream of incestuous words, but instead of reading novels, book reviews, or newspapers like we used to in the ancien rgime, we now read text messages, social media, and bite-sized entries about our protean cultural history on Wikipedia. In the great epistemic galaxy of words, we have become both reading junkies and also professional text skimmers. Reading has become a clumsy science, which is why we keep fudging the lab results. But in diagnosing our own textual attention deficit disorder (ADD), who can blame us for skimming? Were inundated by so much opinion posing as information, much of it the same material […]

This Guy’s Girlfriend Kept Sending Him Messages On Facebook…But She Was Dead

When Redditor natesw’s girlfriend, Emily, died in a car accident in 2012, he was devastated. In an effort to keep her memory alive by looking at her photos and sending her occasional messages, he left her Facebook page up. However, just over a year after her death, he became so creeped out when he started receiving messages from her account that he began sharing these occurrences on Reddit’s NoSleep forum. After getting the first messages on September 4, 2013, he assumed that they were coming from her mom, Susan, who shared access to Emily’s page with him. The Most Hilarious Things You Can Buy On The Internet For Five Dollars.

The Most Hilarious Things You Can Buy On The Internet For Five Dollars.

Fiverr.com is a nifty little site that is a fusion between Kickstarter and Amazon. Basically, you can hire strangers online to do almost anything you want. The price for the services is always the same (a friendly five bucks). What you can get for just $5 varies. You can find cheeky ways to advertise your small business, get custom art or even get a short message from a celebrity like Kelsey Grammar. Here is some of our favorites from Fiverr.com. For $5 you can… …have this guy from Sri Lanka climb a coconut tree and pretend to find your business or website amongst the branches. …have a healing master “uncurse you forever” using ancient techniques so you can laugh in the face of that wood-witch who cast the spell in the first place. …have a special fx artist who works on major motion pictures show you how to make realistic […]

Blogologues: The Hilarious Live Show That Puts Internet Trolls in Their Place

Allison Goldberg and Jen Jamula are speaking to the audience in alternatingrapid-fire bursts, with the familiar staccato of a Gilmore Girls-shapedmachine gun. It’s Friday night at the People’s Improv Theater in New York, and the comedy duo ispretending to host a terrible daytime infomercial for an even more terrible relationship-advice bookone that coacheswomen to disempower themselves if they ever want to earn the affection of a man. The two are chastising the audience for havingthe audacity to express normal human feelings toward another person. “I hate to tell you, but your instincts were right,” Goldberg says to the audience. Jamula chimes in. You could have kept this intense connection alive. You could have avoided this sadness and confusion. You could have had the relationship of a lifetime. If only you’d understood the unspoken desires of men! they continue. “If only you’d given him what he wanted!” And on and on […]

These Amazing Easter Eggs Will Make Going On The Internet Even More Awesome.

Even if you’re erudite enough to know that the Internet isn’t simply “a series of tubes,” there’s still so much you likely have to learn. With so much information that could be accessed in just a few clicks, there’s no way you’ll be able to find it, let alone absorb it all. That’s especially true when all of these sites have such fun hidden messages and games on them. Why do research when you can play Atari? (And it only gets cooler from there.) Take a look at these Internet Easter Eggs! 1.) Google Images eBaum’s World Typing “Atari Breakout” into Google Images will start a round of the 1976 game right there in your browser. 2.) 17 Times Companies Seriously Couldn’t Have Cared Less (And We Loved Them For It)

People have been trolling others on social media since the dawn of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. After all, it’s a lot easier to lash out from behind a keyboard when there aren’t any consequence involved. Things have gotten really interesting since massive companies have started harnessing the power of social media. While they typically use outlets like Twitter for promotional purposes and damage control, something awesome happens when the social media managers behind those accounts start feeling sassy. 1. Just When I Thought I Saw The Stupidest People Ever, These 28 Proved Me Wrong.

Just When I Thought I Saw The Stupidest People Ever, These 28 Proved Me Wrong.

People can be really stupid–that’s nothing new. What’s remarkable is how we’ve found new ways to make complete fools of ourselves. Yes, we’ve come a long way from thinking fire was magic, but everything might not be as great as it seems on the surface. Look at the technology we have available today. Pretty amazing, right? Now look at what some people are doing with that technology. Pretty stupid, right? You almost have to admire them for finding a way to be that idiotic in an age where knowledge is so readily available. Almost. 1.) I wish I could say first was the worst. I really do. 2.) Oof. 3.) -_- 4.) Crazy how nature made that. 5.) Hopefully her son is being provided a better education than she was. 6.) O.O, indeed. 7.) Bruin Pride! 8.) When you estimate, you make an es out of–never mind. 9.) “Shut up […]

Of course, many didn’t agree with that change at the time, which isn’t very surprising. However, it might shock you to see just how many people actually still believe this. A poll was created recently on Debate.org, asking whether women should be allowed to vote. Almost half of the respondents say no, and an alarming number of the comments are so ridiculous that your head might just explode if you happen to be a woman. 1. “Heterosexual women are too emotional to vote. Women, for the better parts of their days, live in a fantasy world and whichever candidate makes them ‘feel’ good at the current moment will get […]

Here’s Photo Evidence That The Matrix Is Real... And This Isn’t Reality.

Here’s Photo Evidence That The Matrix Is Real… And This Isn’t Reality.

If you haven’t seen the sci-fi action movie juggernaut that is The Matrix (I mean, it’s only been out for 15 years now), the basic concept is this: The world as we know it is a computer program designed by a bionic race of robot monsters to lull humans into a dream so they can harbor their energy like a battery. … if that’s too confusing for those who aren’t science fiction buffs, don’t worry. Basically, imagine if your entire world was just a computer program. The movie claims that any instance of déjà vu is just a “glitch in the Matrix.” Here are some pictures that prove that we ARE in the Matrix and our machine overloads think we wouldn’t notice. Or maybe these were just crazy coincidences. Either way? WHOA. The program did not properly render these trees. imgur Or this cloud. imgur *double take* imgur Yeah that’s not […]
