My Life As An NFL Ball Boy

My Life As An NFL Ball Boy

I spent the 2008-2009 season as a ball boy for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I was barely paid, untrained, and pretty much undercover. View this image › Courtesy Dillon Baker It was the kickoff to the 2008-2009 NFL season, and my throws were consistently coming up short. The Pittsburgh Steelers were playing in their first meaningful game since winning the Super Bowl the previous year, and were tied 10–10 with the Tennessee Titans with less than two minutes left on the clock. With QB Ben Roethlisberger driving down the field in hurry-up mode, the ball had to be placed in the field of play as quickly and accurately as possible. But it wasn’t. And it was all because of me. Frustration was mounting among the referees, whose eyes shot increasingly frightening daggers at me for every errant throw. My tosses had an unfortunate tendency to land a few yards in front […]

Ray Rice Reportedly Gets $1.588 Million Settlement From Ravens

He was seeking over $3.5 million. Ray Rice received a $1.588 million settlement for his wrongful termination grievance against the Baltimore Ravens, the Baltimore Sun reported. View this image › Rob Carr / Getty Images The grievance was filed in October 2014, a month after the Ravens cut Rice because of surveillance video showing him punching his then-fiancée in a New Jersey elevator. Rice was looking to receive $3.529 million, the amount he would have made had he played the 14 games after his original two-game suspension. The grievance was settled in January. He was reinstated to the NFL in November after a judge ruled he had been punished twice by the league. He is now an available free agent, and told the Baltimore Sun he “really want[s] to get back out there for [his] pride and to be able to leave the game with dignity.” During the Ravens’ State […]

FCC Will Not Fine Broadcasters For Saying "Redskins" On The Air

FCC Will Not Fine Broadcasters For Saying “Redskins” On The Air

The word does not fit the FCC definition of obscenity. 1. The FCC released a statement Thursday saying it has “dismissed” a petition to make saying Washington’s NFL team name on air a finable offense. View this image › Mark J. Rebilas/Usa Today Sports Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder. In September, a petition was filed to designate the word “Redskins” as an obscene term, under the argument that the word “causes ‘psychological harm, not only to Indian and non-Indian children, but also to Indian adults.’” In today’s decision, the FCC found that argument invalid, as the Supreme Court defines obscenity as language that “depicts or describes sexual conduct.” It also rejected the claim that the word is profane, under citing the FCC definition as “language so grossly offensive to members of the public who actually hear it as to amount to a nuisance.” The FCC did not find the word […]

The NFL Has A Problem With Their Touchdown Celebration Rules. They Need More.

The NFL Has A Problem With Their Touchdown Celebration Rules. They Need More.

This season has been a disaster for the NFL. Sure, there are tons of good games, but there are also lots of scandals. They’ve been accused of ignoring claims of domestic violence, unfairly punishing players, and that isn’t even the worst of it. Over the weekend the NFL got into more trouble because of a time honored tradition, the touchdown celebration. Husain Abdullah was penalized for this touchdown celebration, in which he bows down and prays, a common practice for his Muslim faith. Abdullah is a devout Muslim and even skipped the last NFL season so he could make the Islamic trip to Mecca. This is what the NFL penalizes. deadspin But these… totalprosports Intentionally… boltbeat Ridiculous… gifdsports Disrespectful… dailydot Touchdown… dailydot Dances… vh1 That seem inappropriate… complex That injure people… reddit Sometimes violent… totalprosports Stupid… totalprosports That involve more than one person… huffingtonpost That sometimes don’t even work… totalprosports …are fine. Data Show The Patriots Have Fumbled The Ball Far Less Than Any Other NFL Team

Data Show The Patriots Have Fumbled The Ball Far Less Than Any Other NFL Team

A data analyst crunched the numbers for games dating back to 2000. 1. Warren Sharp at Sharp Football Analysis spent a generous amount of time digging into the the Patriots’ records of fumbles and ball security. He analyzed each team in the league, then plotted them in a chart. The results are, to say the least, interesting: View this image › Warren Sharp / Via sharpfootballanalysis.com The orange line shows the average number of plays teams run between fumbles: The Eagles anchor the league with one fumble every 76 plays, the Patriots lead with one fumble every 187 plays. Their nearest competitor, the Houston Texans, fumble once every 140 plays. The blue plots show the total number of fumbles made by each team since 2010. The Broncos have fumbled the most, with 73 offensive fumbles, and the Eagles trail behind with 72. The Patriots again anchor the other end of […]

NFL commish and execs ordered to testify at Rice Rice’s appeal hearing

http://twitter.com/#!/scottclyerly/status/525266457773752321 One of the lesser reported aspects of the Ray Rice case has been Rice’s appeal of his indefinite suspension by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.  Rice’s argument in this appeal is that under the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement between the players and the league, a player cannot be punished twice for the same infraction. Kind of like a union version of double jeopardy. What Goodell and the NFL knew and when did they know is as at the heart of Rice’s argument and if Rice can prove that Goodell did know everything when he first issued the light suspension of two games, then the NFL isn’t allowed to slap Rice with the indefinite suspension. Goodell and the NFL are claiming, however, they didn’t have all the information they needed to render a verdict initially and the indefinite suspension should stand. But as Twitchy reported, there is some question if that’s really a […]

Seattle Seahawk Marshawn Lynch Is Being Fined $20,000 For Grabbing His Crotch…Again

The Seahawks running back is locked in an expensive battle with the NFL that is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon. The NFL’s struggle with how to punish players for non-football behavior. View this image › Christian Petersen / Getty Images At least Marshawn Lynch is consistent. Marshawn Lynch again is being fined for grabbing his crotch after scoring a monster touchdown during the NFC Championship game and will be fined once again for refusing to speak to the media after a game. This time, he’ll pay $20,000 for the “obscene gesture” and the NFL is threatening to fine him “significantly more” than the $50,000 Lynch has already paid twice for ignoring media obligations. His teammate, Chris Matthews, was fined $11,050 for what the league says was an “obscene gesture” that mimicked Lynch’s signature crotch grab. However, Lynch and Williams say the latter was fined only for shaking Lynch’s hand […]

http://twitter.com/#!/rihanna/status/511844530375892992 She does have a point as it looked like the NFL canceled her appearance last Thursday because she was a past victim of domestic who had reconciled with her abuser: CBS you pulled my song last week, now you wanna slide it back in this Thursday? NO, Fuck you! Y'all are sad for penalizing me for this. — Rihanna (@rihanna) September 16, 2014 FWIW, the NFL said that she was cancelled not because of her past history, but because of the overall “tone” of the broadcast: “We thought journalistically and from a tone standpoint, we needed to have the appropriate tone and coverage,” CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus told SI.com last week of the decision to bump Rihanna’s intro, among other features. “A lot of the production elements we wanted in the show are being eliminated because of time or tone.” Now the “tone” has changed an it’s okay […]

Surveillance Video Reportedly Shows Patriots Locker Room Attendant Carry Footballs Into Bathroom

Surveillance Video Reportedly Shows Patriots Locker Room Attendant Carry Footballs Into Bathroom

It’s unclear, though, if the person of interest committed any wrongdoing, sources told FOX Sports. View this image › David Butler Ii / Usa Today Sports 2. The NFL has zeroed in on a locker room attendant as part of its investigation into underinflated footballs used by the New England Patriots during the AFC Championship Game. The league determined that 11 of the 12 footballs the Patriots used while playing the Indianapolis Colts were underinflated by a significant amount. The Patriots ended up winning the game 45-7. Underinflated footballs can provide a competitive advantage because they’re easier to grip and throw. The first underinflated ball was noticed when Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw a pass that was intercepted by a Colts defender, who notified an official. The NFL has since launched an investigation into who deflated the footballs. Teams provide 12 footballs bearing their logo that are tested two hours […]

http://twitter.com/#!/psmith23/status/507582333524770816 Devon Still, a defensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals, had his life change forever when on June 2 his four-year-old daughter, Leah, was diagnosed with stage-4 neuroblastoma cancer. As you can imagine, Still wasn’t able to devote 100% to football as he cared for his daughter and the Bengals were forced to cut him from the team’s final 53-man roster. But that’s not how the story ended. . . http://twitter.com/#!/ABC/status/507581935388880896 Still told ABC News: “They could have washed their hands with me and said they didn’t care about what I was going through off the field,” Still said. “It’s like a blessing in disguise for me.” Great job, Bengals.
