These People Volunteered To Go To Jail For Two Months, And This Is What Happened

Recently, President Obama made a historic visit the El Reno Federal Correctional Institution in Oklahoma in an effort to highlight problems with how we deal with crime in our country. It is the first time that a sitting president has visited an American prison. And in the same vein, a new show on A&E called 60 Days In takes seven regular citizens into custody for a two-month period. It may sound like a nightmare waiting to happen, but it’s an effort on the part of Sheriff Jamey Noel of Clark County, Indiana, to understand the deeper problems faced by the criminal justice system today. To participate in the experiment, 7 volunteers, who have committed no crimes, spend two months in Clark County Jail. Both fellow inmates and guards believe them to be convicted criminals. Chris Christie Says Parents Should Have A Choice In Vaccinating Kids

View this image › Chris Christie and his wife Mary Pat Christie visit the One Nucleus life science company headquarters in Cambridge, eastern England, on Monday. Neil Hall / Reuters New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Monday that parents should have “some measure of choice” in vaccinating their children, breaking with a majority opinion of the medical community. His comments came during an ongoing outbreak of measles across the United States. When asked about the link between the outbreak in 14 states and anti-vaccine parents, Christie said that his children had been vaccinated and that it was “an important part of being sure we protect their health and the public health,” according to transcripts provided by his office. He added, however, “It’s much more important, I think, what you think as a parent […]

For decades, the U.S. embargo against Cuba has torn apart families like mine. View this image › My mother embracing her Cuban cousin for the first time in nearly 50 years. Miguel Piedra I’m 39 years old, a Miami native whose Cuban parents came to America as teenagers fleeing the harsh realities of Cuba’s totalitarian socialist system. Arriving in the U.S. with little more than the clothes on their backs, my parents and grandparents have lived nearly 50 years in limbo, leading a life in mourning. What was supposed to be a temporary diaspora in el exilio has dragged on for nearly five decades. That is the unspoken truth of life as a Cuban exile. And while I observe the debate surrounding President Obama’s decision to relax the embargo against Cuba, I am reminded that the only embargo that truly exists is a human embargo — the one that has […]

He also added a signing statement in which he reiterated his desire to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. It was a goal he mentioned often during the 2008 campaign, and in the first days of his presidency he issued an executive order to close the Cuba-based detention facility. “Since taking office,” the president wrote, “I have repeatedly called upon the Congress to work with my Administration to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The continued operation of the facility weakens our national security by draining resources, damaging our relationships with key allies and partners, and emboldening violent extremists.” The president singled out two sections of the Act for criticism, including Section 1034, which “renews the bar against using appropriated funds to transfer Guantanamo detainees in the United States for any purpose,” such as for trial.!/ZekeJMiller/status/416311617215672320 […]

Dems got shellacked at the polls yesterday, that’s not in doubt. But now comes the analysis to figure out who’s at fault. Could it possibly be a president whose policies are quite unpopular? NAH!!! According to Twitchy regular Donna Brazile, it’s that the candidates ran away from those policies and away from the president: Oh really? Exactly. If anything, the big races that Dems lost yesterday werebecause of their embrace of President Obama’s policies or the embrace of future Dem policies. Let’s recap… In Kentucky, Matt Bevin won the governorship with a promise to roll back Obamacare — what Hillary Clinton says is swell: With an African-American woman as running mate, no less: Houston’s “HERO” equal-rightsordinance — also championed by Hillary Clinton — lost big, too: Earlier in the day Clinton even sparred with Texas Governor Greg Abbott over it: Marijuana in Ohio — a favorite topic of Bernie Sanders? Boston Fire Department attributes blaze to rooftop solar panel

Who doesn’t love solar panels? Maybe you even took the advice of the U.S. Department of Energy and dressed up as a solar panel thisHalloween. President Obama is certainly a fan. In July, he announced a plan to triple his administration’s goal for installing renewable energy for low- and moderate-income housing. It would be a win-win; the plan would create jobs for solar panel manufacturers and installers, and the poor would enjoy cheap electricity. Candidate Bernie Sanders jumped on board too, saying he’d create a fund that would help makesolar panels available to low-income families, woman- or minority-owned small businesses, Indian tribal lands, the Appalachia region and Alaskan native communities. Before installing all of those solar panels on low-income housing,a second look into their safety might be in order. The Boston Fire Department tweeted yesterday that a malfunctioning solar panel started a fire on the roof of a five-story building. […]

White House issues embarrassing correction to Obama’s speech

If you watched President Obama’s speech tonight, did you catch his error? He mistakenly said terroristTashfeen Malik came to the U.S. on a visa waiver which “allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States without a visa for stays of 90 days or less.” Pakistan — Malik’s country of birth — is not one of these countries: Whoops.
