Food Coloring Isn’t That Interesting Here On Earth…But In Space? It’s Awesome.

The most exciting thing food coloring has ever done for me is turn a regular white frosting into a slightly less white, more sky-blue birthday cake topping. That’s all well and good, and adding a dash of color to the little things in life is not something to take for granted… But when you’re in outer space, food coloring — along with pretty much everything else, I assume — gets way more interesting. Because, y’know, space is the best. Boop! YouTube Space fizz is pretty cool, too. YouTube If it weren’t also such a terrifying and unfathomable thing to leave the Earth’s atmosphere and enter the vast void that is our solar system…I’d totally go into space to watch this firsthand. Definitely. Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/space-food-coloring/

Vantablack Is The Darkest Material Known To Man, And It's Pretty Trippy

Vantablack Is The Darkest Material Known To Man, And It’s Pretty Trippy

What some people don’t realize is just how amazing the breakthroughs of modern technology really are. This could have something to do with the fact that many groundbreaking inventions and discoveries seem too far-fetched to be real. An excellent example of this phenomenon is known as Vantablack, and it’s listed by The Guinness Book of World Records as being the world’s darkest substance. This is Vantablack in all its glory. When it was introduced, the company that manufactured it from tiny carbon nanotubes reported that Vantablack can absorb up to 99.96 percent of the light that contacts the material. Wikipedia I know that sounds fantastical, but after seeing a few videos of Vantablack in action, I definitely believe those claims. The material is used primarily for military and astronautical purposes. For example, Vantablack has been used in telescopes to absorb extra light which allows the viewer to see more distant […]

Even Mundane Activities Are Insanely Awesome (And Really Difficult) In Space

Everyone has wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut at one point or another. Flying around in outer space has to be a ton of fun, right? And how cool would it be to live without gravity for a little while? Well, trying to carry out everyday activities is actually extremely difficult without the help of gravity’s reliable pull. Here are a few things that you do every day that would be insanely hard to do if you were up in space. Brushing your teeth Making a burrito Cleaning up spills Playing music Working out Clipping your nails Getting sick Playing soccer Cooking a Thanksgiving meal Sleeping var OX_ads = OX_ads || []; OX_ads.push({ slot_id: “537251604_5641890863467”, auid: “537251604” }); Doing laundry Washing your hair Unwinding with your favorite hobbies Going to the bathroom Crying And of course, eating chips Giphy (via Mental Floss) I’m beginning to question […]

Something Washed Up On This Small Beach. When They Found Out What It Was… Holy Cow!

Imagine taking an evening walk along the beach and stumbling upon something huge and awesome that washed ashore: a rocket. That’s exactly what happened to this Reddit user. He was walking up and down the shore but had to drop everything when he found this debris. Not knowing exactly what it was, he brought it home, took pictures of it and uploaded them to the internet. Then, he learned exactly what it was. It was awesome. After posting these images online, it was discovered that this large piece of debris was actually from space. newroot The piece of metal was from a Ariane 5 rocket. newroot Specifically, it’s the payload shroud from the rocket. newroot It’s discarded at about 150km altitude. newroot That means it’s discarded 50km into space. newroot It’s officially space debris. newroot This hunk of junk traveled so many miles. newroot It’s a once in a lifetime find. newroot This was heat […]

This Terrifying Face Was Created By The Same People Who First Put A Man On The Moon

NASA is obviously known first and foremost for space exploration (and for helping us win the Cold War, of course). Back in the day, though, NASA didn’t just research rocket ships and space flight. They dabbled in all sorts of experiments. While plenty of this old research is still classified, bits of information have leaked over the years. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); }); One of NASA’s freakiest experiments of all time is the so-called “NASA Android.” While it never made it to full production (for reasons you’ll soon see), this hydraulic-powered prototype looks like it’s straight out of a freaky science-fiction movie. Don’t believe me? See for yourself in the video below. (via Reddit) If, for whatever reason, you want to get to know this thing a little bit better, it’s currently on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. Read more: […]

These Awesome Facts About Space Will Leave You In Awe.

Space: The undiscovered country. The final frontier. The last vestige of explorers. And, yes, the setting of Star Trek. Space is the greatest mystery and, even though it literally surrounds us, it’s the one we ignore the most. When was the last time you sat around and pondered how you’re sitting on a planet in the middle of the biggest “ocean” in existence? We did some pondering for you. These 19 jaw-dropping facts about space might just have you wanting more from the universe. Just don’t try to build your own Starship Enterprise or anything of the sort. They’re not real… yet. 1.) It takes a proton close to 170,000 YEARS to travel from the center of the sun to the surface, and then only 8 minutes to reach Earth. NASA 2.) Spaghettification is what scientists call the effect of falling through a black hole and stretching out like spaghetti. […]

This Is What The Largest Hot Desert In The World Looks Like From Space.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, some of them are bound to be interesting. In this photograph taken by an astronaut in the International Space Station, the Sahara desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. The meeting point of the largest hot desert in the world and the world’s second largest ocean is pretty epic (as it should be). Check it out! NASA The distance from which the picture was taken allows us to observe natural patterns like wind streaks and the reflected sunlight makes it possible for us to see sabkhas (salt flats) and internal waves. Though internal waves are barely even noticeable from the surface, below it they can sometimes grow to an upwards of 550 feet. The phosphate transport line really puts into perspective how great of a distance must be traveled to bring phosphate minerals from the inland mines to the coast for trade. The minerals are used […]

According To NASA, You Could Leave Your Crappy Job And Work On Mars Instead

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTAT_ATF’); }); Here’s how I feel after I watch the news every night: And I know for a fact that you feel my struggle on some level. Life here on planet Earth is rough, folks. If you’re sick of feeling like you’re living in the middle of a dumpster fire, why not hitch a ride on a rocket ship and leave this nonsense behind? Sure, that might be a fantasy right now, but NASA wants us to know that there’s potential for some extreme escapism on the horizon. NASA just released these posters that detail employment opportunities on the Red Planet, and I’m seriously not mad at any of it. If you’re interested in taking one small step for man and one giant leap for “get me the hell out of here right this second,” check them out. According to this handy little guide, NASA researchers are embarking […]

9 Things I Want My Son To Know About The Universe

9 Things I Want My Son To Know About The Universe

Life is short, and you’ve got a lot to learn. Here are a few good places to start. My son turned 1 the other day. vine.co His name’s William; we call him Billy. That video is him on his birthday. It’s a strange thing, because he’s barely begun to exist and yet he’s already about 1% of the way through the time he’ll exist for. He hasn’t even learned to speak yet, but he’s going to have to learn so much so quickly. It seems unfair. So I thought I’d write down a few things that he ought to know about the world. So here goes, Billy. 1. You are an animal. Your great-X-grandparents were a sort of ape. View this image › On your mother’s side, obviously. ONLY JOKING. 21 Space-Related Conspiracy Theories That Will Make You Think Twice

21 Space-Related Conspiracy Theories That Will Make You Think Twice

The solar system that we call home is a fascinating place. It’s our own little neighborhood in the infinite universe, and we’re still discovering new things about it every single day. There are, however, some space findings and scientific theories that many people feel have been hidden from the public, and kept secret by government organizations. This has inspired people to come up with pretty wild theories of their own, ranging from believable, to scary, to downright entertaining. Here are 21 space- and UFO-related conspiracy theories that people actually believe in. 1. Comet Landing iStock The European Space Agency pulled off a remarkable feat when they successfully docked the Philae spacecraft on a comet. Due to odd circumstances surrounding the event (including the ESA claiming to have heard strange sounds coming from the comet), theorists argue that the comet was actually an alien object. 2. This Is Some Of The Most Ludicrous Things We Have Discovered In Outer Space.

Remember when we were all in grade school and we were taught about space? Didn’t it sound amazing? It sure did then… and sure does, even now. There are some crazy things going on in space that we are still discovering. With its seemingly endless landscape, space will always be something that we are studying. Here are some of the weirdest things we have seen while studying the sky. 1.) Massive Electric Currents list25 These currents have beens pied radiating from black holes. One has been spotted that is about 1.5 times the size of our whole Milky Way galaxy. That’s shocking! 2.) Pluto’s Ice koldcast The temperature on the (former) planet Pluto is so low that the ice found on the planet is harder than most steel. You have the -390 degrees Fahrenheit to thank for that. 3.) The Future Of Space Isn't NASA... And That's Not A Bad Thing.

The Future Of Space Isn’t NASA… And That’s Not A Bad Thing.

Space: it’s the final frontier. Space has long been exclusively navigated by the world’s most well-off nations (U.S and the Soviet Union) but the future of space exploration seems to be in the hands of private companies. Since it will be privately funded, CEOs will be able to determine the flight paths (and the style.) These guys are seriously ambitious. Here are some of the craziest projects in the works from privately funded space programs: 1.) Check in to the Space Hotel: Robert Bigelow, owner of the hotel chain, Budget Suites of America, has also founded Bigelow Aerospace. It aims to facilitate travel destinations in space. 1565today.com 2.) A Giant Solar Generator: The Shimuzu Corporation is planning on building a mega-scale solar generator on the moon’s surface. If all of our energy is generated by solar panels on the moon, how will your neighbors with solar panels on their roof make […]

If The Sun Were To Ever Disappear, Here Are 12 Ways We'd All Basically Be Screwed

If The Sun Were To Ever Disappear, Here Are 12 Ways We’d All Basically Be Screwed

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the sun just vanished? I’m sure that if you have, you’ve probably come to the conclusion that it wouldn’t be anything good — and you’d definitely be right. The people over at The Solar Centre were curious about this exact thing, so they created a slightly terrifying infographic detailing how the solar system and Earth would be affected over time without that great big ball in the sky. 1. After eight minutes, the planets would stop orbiting because there would no longer be a gravitational pull from the sun. They would all just travel in a straight line through space. Wikipedia 2. One minute later, we’d all be engulfed in darkness. 3. At this time, the stars would still be visible, but without the sun illuminating the moon, we’d never see it again. This Is What A Cheeseburger Looks Like In Space

This Is What A Cheeseburger Looks Like In Space

I’ll stick to the regular earth kind, thanks. 1. Astronaut Terry Virts has tweeted out a picture of a space-cheeseburger. #SpaceCheeseburger. Beef patties, Russian mustard, tomato paste, cheese paste, and tortilla. VERY TASTY! — AstroTerry (@Terry W. Virts) 2. Just. Look. At. It. View this image › Twitter: @AstroTerry 3. It makes sense that the normal ingredients are replaced with their space-paste versions, but why is it in a tortilla? Zero gravity makes assembling a sandwich difficult, and the crumbs from regular bread are dangerous if they get stuck in airvents or sensitive equipment. That’s why Tortillas have replaced bread in space since 1980. 4. Sadly, that means this gif is lying to you. View this image › giphy.com 5. And that this cat sits on a throne of lies.
