What They Recorded Will Make You Think Twice About Driving Ever Again

What They Recorded Will Make You Think Twice About Driving Ever Again

Distracted driving is a huge problem in America, and despite our best efforts to combat it, the reckless behavior claims more lives every day. While not every instance ends in tragedy, there’s no excuse for risking your safety and the safety of others over a text. Globally, roughly 1.3 million people die in car accidents each year, and between 20 and 50 million are injured. Distracted driving increases these chances, and when you see this video, you’ll be baffled by our dangerous habits. In 2013, over 3,000 people were killed in car accidents involving distracted driving, and another 400,000 were injured. That’s what makes videos like the one below so alarming. (via SR22Agency.com) Let’s pledge to put our phones down and save the food for a table, not your lap. It’s far more important to get to our destinations alive than it is to multitask. People Are Totally Freaking Out Over This Swing, And You Will Be Too When You See It

A bucket list staple for intrepid travelers, Hawaii’s Haiku Stairs attract hundreds of adventurers every year. This hiking trail on the island of O’ahu is made up of almost 4,000 steps, and it provides climbers with unbeatable views from atop the Ko’olau mountain range. The only catch? Sadly, it’s been illegal to use the trail since 1987, and a storm rendered the stairs totally unsafe in 2015. And if you know anything whatsoever about humans, you know that plenty of people go right ahead and ignore all of that nonsense on a daily basis. In fact, one search on Yelp yields hundreds of reviews written by daredevils who decided to climb the Haiku Stairs anyway. Wikimedia Commons One such daredevil built a swing alongside the trail because that doesn’t sound like a terrible idea at all. As you might imagine, young people have taken it upon themselves to say, “You […]

Even If You Hate Cigarettes, You’ll Want To Go To This Cigarette Shop.

Okay, listen, we would never encourage you to start a smoking habit. Cigarettes are gross and unhealthy, we know. But, we definitely encourage you to check out this cigarette shop in Japan where you’ll be greeted by the cutest cashier ever: a shiba-inu dog.  The small shop is called Suzuki and draws in tourists as well as regular customers to its Tokyo location all because of this adorable pup who lives there with his owner. And you can’t blame them. Take a look while I go check out the price of a ticket to Japan. “Hi, what can I get for ya?” Waiting for customers. Check out the little figurines of him on the right! The friendliest cashier you’ll ever meet. And the CUTEST. Probably the only employee who can get away with napping on the job. 14 English Words That Mean Something Totally Different In Other Languages

It’s no secret that English is one of the most baffling languages out there. Sometimes it seems like there are more exceptions than rules, doesn’t it? While those of us who are native speakers breeze through everyday conversations, the words that come out of our mouths get lost in translation elsewhere. Here are 14 English words that have homonyms with totally different meanings in other languages! Although the words themselves aren’t direct translations, they mean something totally different when you break it down to phonetics. 1. Air means water in Indonesian. Flickr / Luis Deliz 2. Pet translates to fart in French. Flickr / Todd McCann 3. Here’s another English-to-French doozy. Smoking means tuxedo. Flickr / Ben Grey 4. Kiss means pee in Swedish. Flickr / Lesa Monster 5. This Artist’s Passion Project Evolved Into A Masterful Series Of Tiny Paintings

As creators continue to harness their abilities, the inclination to go bigger is part of what’s become a natural progression — and that makes sense in a world that equates larger-than-life works of art to larger-than-life talent. One artist by the name of Dina Brodksy, however, proves that creating small, painstakingly detailed pieces is certainly no small feat. Her collection of miniatures called Cycling Guide to Lilliput has garnered critical acclaim, and Brodsky’s unique touch is at once sentimental and deliberate. She recently took the time to walk ViralNova through her inspiration and process. Dina Brodsky What’s the relationship between your medium, subject matter, and the small, circular surface? Do they inform each other in your process? The summer before I started the series, I was looking through a friend’s binoculars, and was struck by how they turned the world into circular, miniature universes. I had just come back from […]

This Crazy Thing Actually Happens On Train Tracks When It's Too Hot Out

This Crazy Thing Actually Happens On Train Tracks When It’s Too Hot Out

Imagine you’re taking a nice, quiet train trip when all of a sudden THIS happens: googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); }); Luckily the passengers aboard that locomotive traveling to Melbourne were all okay, but the reality is traveling by train isn’t as safe as you once thought. That crazy imperfection on the metal tracks is known as railway buckling. It can be caused by a direct increase of heat which causes the metal to expand and shift, derailing your comfortable train ride. It looks like something out of a ghost movie, but the phenomenon is entirely real. Now, you may be thinking that this could only happen in the summer months when temperatures are well into the 80s and 90s, but you’re wrong. Buckling can occur in any season because it’s not just direct sunlight that can cause the sudden curvature. Trains that are traveling incredibly too fast can also overheat the […]

This Seriously Creepy Sea Creature Belongs In A Science Fiction Movie.

Singapore fisherman Ong Han Boon reeled in some doozies in his day, but nothing prepared him for the shocking discovery he made recently. The animal, with its writhing arms, looks like it came straight from a sci-fi flick. Actually, it came from the dark depths of the ocean, where humans rarely go. Boon told his local radio station he was “totally flummoxed” when the fish surfaced. YouTube Unsure about what it was, Boon’s first thought was that he “discovered a new species of mutant sea creature.” YouTube Although it isn’t quite an otherworldly creature, Boon said he wouldn’t have been surprised because of how polluted the waters are. YouTube I would probably scream if I reeled in one of these things…  The fisherman later learned with the help of the Internet that the creature was a basket starfish. They typically live in deep sea environments and can have life spans of up to 35 […]

10 Things Americans Do That Other Countries Find Disgusting (I Had No Idea!)

10 Things Americans Do That Other Countries Find Disgusting (I Had No Idea!)

It’s kind of cool that for the last 240 years, the U.S. has acted like a reckless, young-gun police officer who gets the job done but plays by his own rules (think Mel Gibson in “Lethal Weapon”). But this behavior has caused the rest of the world (like Danny Glover in “Lethal Weapon”) to perceive us as arrogant children who don’t have any respect for history. Because of this, Americans are far more heavily scrutinized than many other tourists, which may not be fair, but it happens. The travel-minded YouTube channel geobeats has compiled some American habits that, for whatever reason, foreigners find offensive. 1. We refer to the United States as America. Flickr / Michael Dougherty South American countries, in particular, take offense to how the U.S. has laid claim to the phrase “America,” as if the rest of the countries in North and South America don’t matter. It’s […]

What’s Inside This Book Will Totally Change Your Perspective On These Famous Sites

If you’re a travel buff, you know that there’s nothing more satisfying than standing in the shadows of famous landmarks. There’s something special about craning your neck to see the top of the Eiffel Tower or approaching the Statue of Liberty from the harbor. Beloved sites like these become benchmarks of exploration — monuments to the sense of wanderlust that sends people thousands of miles across the globe each year. But when it comes time to conjure up images in the mind’s eye, these landmarks present the most complete versions of themselves. We see the Taj Mahal’s famous dome in the reflecting pool. We see Tower Bridge looming over the Thames. We do not, however, see their skeletons. But this book by Wolfgang Wild and Jordan Lloyd (of Retronaut and Dynamichrome, respectively) is about to change your perspective on the landmarks you thought you knew. This Is Why Your 'Locked' Luggage Isn't As Safe As You Think

This Is Why Your ‘Locked’ Luggage Isn’t As Safe As You Think

When traveling, it’s best not to keep valuable items in a locked suitcase. Your passport, credit cards, cash, and other important items should stay on your person (or at least close by). Some people believe that locking them in a suitcase is a safe alternative…but it isn’t. Even if you have a strong lock, the suitcase can be breached with relative ease. Your locked suitcase isn’t as safe as you think. Yet another example of how quickly a zip breach can occur: Expensive new luggage and gear may offer safer alternatives…but it’s best to not take anything for granted (especially if you’re traveling overseas). These Impressive Underground Shelters Will Keep You Safe In Style.

A new perceived threat followed World War II and the Cold War. A fear of getting hit by the nuclear “big one” became a way of life for Americans and other countries all over the world. School drills telling kids to hide under desks didn’t quell the nerves of some families. With paranoia lurking everywhere, underground shelters began to pop up across the globe. Author and photographer Richard Ross sought these shelters out during his travels and documented them for his project, “Waiting for the End of the World.” These impressive structures transformed over the years into tourist attractions, comfortable living spaces, and even a night club. Okay, Who Thought It Was A Good Idea To Open A Kalashnikov Store In An Airport?

It’s pretty safe to say that Russia is a land of extremes. Judging by some of the wacky stories that make news over here in the States, Russians don’t do anything halfway. It’s all or nothing. These Illegally Obtained Photos Prove That Normalcy Can Be Just As Chilling As Chaos

When we think about North Korea, “mundanity” isn’t a concept that typically comes to mind. We ideate scenes of oppression and social injustice. Our minds fill with imagined horrors built with the brick and mortar of news footage and legacy media. And that makes sense, since atrocity is the thread that weaves together every scrap of the North Korean experience. It’s the cultural tie that binds. But when photographer Michal Huniewicz illegally documented his time in the country, the resulting collection revealed an image of North Korean life that twists seemingly innocuous imagery into a haunting spectacle of everyday life lived under oppression’s thumb. We don’t often picture grocery checkout lines, hotel lobbies, and tour buses. We don’t picture life happening in a nation shrouded in mystery and removal. Michal Huniewicz But it does. Families congregate around TVs playing approved programming. Mothers buy food at the local supermarket. Receptionists check […]

Questionable hygiene, cramped quarters, and eerie inhabitants make these neighborhood undesirable destinations. Paying your neighborhood dues won’t seem so bad after seeing a few of these places. (I suddenly appreciate my homeowner’s association.) …Though that underground city does seem pretty sweet. 1.) Kowloon Wall, Hong Kong Imgur Before it was demolished in 1994, this home to 33,000 residents was the most densely populated area of Hong Kong and existed without any police or protective service. The only thing close to being governed was the control of the Triad gang. On top of the prolific criminal activity, the buildings themselves were not structurally sound and were prone to catching on fire. 2.) Gibsonton, Florida Imgur This town just south of Tampa was formed by traveling “freak show” performers on their off-seasons. While most of […]

This Is Why You Should Always Check Your Hotel For Bed Bugs, Even If It's Upscale

This Is Why You Should Always Check Your Hotel For Bed Bugs, Even If It’s Upscale

As someone who has gone through the terrible ordeal of getting bed bugs in their home, I am constantly on high alert at any hotel I visit — no matter how many stars it has. Unfortunately, not everyone knows to look before they put their bags down or take a nap on the bed. Elgin Ozlen and his girlfriend were victims of this lack of knowledge. When Ozlen’s mom bought the couple a trip to NYC, they never thought they’d have to deal with the horror they experienced at a chic Upper West Side hotel they stayed at. After being moved from two other rooms in the Astor on the Park hotel (due to lack of heating and power to the outlets), they landed in a third one. They went to sleep but woke up the next day to their worst nightmare. Warning: this video is not for those with […]

When You See The World's Largest Salt Flats, You'll Want To Visit ASAP

When You See The World’s Largest Salt Flats, You’ll Want To Visit ASAP

When you think of salt flats, visions of a boring road trip with your parents might come to mind. But Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flats, located in Bolivia, will definitely change that preconception. Occupying over 4,000 square miles nearly 12,000 feet above sea level in the Andes, the magical destination is anything but boring. While it might seem unlikely, the salt flats were formed tens of thousands of years ago from a number of prehistoric lakes. Flickr / Dimitry B. During the warmer months, the flats dry over and reveal their true, salty nature. Wikimedia Commons Speaking of salt, there’s a lot of it! Somewhere around 11 billion tons, actually. Flick / fabulousfabs About 27,000 tons are mined each year. Come the rainy season, which actually isn’t all that wet — at most, a few inches per month — the flats receive a thin coating of water. Here's Why You Should Always Check The Exchange Rate Before Converting Money Abroad

Here’s Why You Should Always Check The Exchange Rate Before Converting Money Abroad

The summer before my senior year of college, I headed off to Prague for three weeks. While I took in the many sights (and craft beers), I swiped my debit card without giving it a second thought. But as my travel agent mother warned me more than once, it’s best to check the exchange rate before spending or withdrawing money to ensure that you’re getting the most bang for your buck. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); }); As one honest tour guide points out in the video below, exchange stations often do their best to rob unwitting travelers blind. Watch what happens when he steps inside. While I must have walked past this particular exchange station in Old Town Square at least a dozen times, I’m glad I never felt the need to go in. Pro tip: Exchange as much of your money as you can before you leave to get the […]

This Epcot-like Chinese Theme Park Is Equal Parts Creepy And Interesting

Yeah, the world seems pretty great and all, but is seeing it really worth going to all of those places? I can hardly muster up the energy to go see what’s in the refrigerator, how am I going to handle all of the traveling that’s involved with visiting the world’s most famous landmarks? It’s not like I can eat those! Luckily, for people like me, you can see most of the monuments, buildings, and other things that you really should see in your lifetime in one go.
