View this image › Nate Guidry/Pittsburgh Post-Gazette / MCT WASHINGTON — The biggest names in progressive politics and libertarian-leaning conservatism are launching an aggressive, well-funded lobbying effort aimed at changing the U.S. criminal justice system. For the first time, the groups on both sides of the aisle — long allied on efforts to reduce mandatory sentences, lower prison populations, and re-evaluate the war on drugs in the states — will move their efforts from state-based policies to the federal level. On Thursday, the Coalition for Public Safety debuted with a high-profile conference call featuring major operators in political advocacy. Koch-funded activists like FreedomWorks’ Matt Kibbe and the Center For American Progress’ Neera Tanden sketched out a promise to work together on criminal […]

Reporter compares the Ebola quarantine to WWII internment camps!/laura_lrnzo/status/526458885003956224 Ron Fournier, reporter for National Journal, has earned our praise on these pages of late as a voice of reason in the ongoing national debate on Ebola, which is why this tweet of his took us by surprise:!/ron_fournier/status/526457661026746368 That’s right — The 21-day quarantine of aid worker Kaci Hickox, who just arrived in Newark, NJ after treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone, is now the same as WWII internment camps. Fournier’s readers blasted him for the analogy: @ron_fournier you're comparing this to Japanese internment? — Matt Lewis (@mattklewis) October 26, 2014 @ron_fournier really? You're trying to draw an equivalence between these? Sheesh. — Scott Harmon (@scotthar_tx) October 26, 2014 @mattklewis @ron_fournier Good Lord, a grip is in order. — Laura Lorenzo (@laura_lrnzo) October 26, 2014 @ron_fournier I don't think this is an accurate comparison. O’Malley: Border kids would be in danger in ‘conservative part’ of MD!/GovernorOMalley/status/487763682625998851 “Certain death?” Really? Is there a genocide or plague occurring in Central America that only O’Malley is aware of? Or is Marty just being his usual overly dramatic self? Keep in mind that O’Malley is a staunch abortion supporter, so “certain death” for kids doesn’t always trouble him.!/stevebruskCNN/status/489195169406001152!/JimAcostaCNN/status/489194479362916352!/IsaacDovere/status/489206014076784642 Baltimore is still on the table? That might be more dangerous than wherever these illegal immigrant kids came from. The Politico article gives O’Malley some cover by saying he opposed putting the kids in “western” Maryland because *gasp* “it’s a conservative part of the state.” Hours after the Maryland governor and prospective 2016 presidential candidate became the most prominent Democrat to criticize the White House on the issue, Domestic Policy Director Cecilia Muñoz called O’Malley to complain. But before they hung up, O’Malley told Muñoz not to send any of the children to the facility in Westminster, Md., that the White House […]

The perception of critics is that Wasserman Schultz spends more energy tending to her own political ambitions than helping Democrats win. This includes using meetings with DNC donors to solicit contributions for her own PAC and campaign committee, traveling to uncompetitive districts to court House colleagues for her potential leadership bid and having DNC-paid staff focus on her personal political agenda. CBO says minimum wage hike will cost 500K jobs; Dan Pfeiffer, WH run interference!/MetricButtload/status/435859481423908864 Well, shoot. This doesn’t sound like what the White House said would happen:!/jamiedupree/status/435853641162166272 According to the CBO’s report, an estimated 16.5 million workers would see higher earnings if the minimum hourly wage were raised to $10.10. But there are some important stipulations: The increased earnings for low-wage workers resulting from the higher minimum wage would total $31 billion, by CBO’s estimate. However, those earnings would not go only to low-income families, because many low-wage workers are not members of low-income families. Just 19 percent of the $31 billion would accrue to families with earnings below the poverty threshold, whereas 29 percent would accrue to families earning more than three times the poverty threshold, CBO estimates. Moreover, the increased earnings for some workers would be accompanied by reductions in real (inflation-adjusted) income for the people who became jobless because of the minimum-wage increase, for business owners, and for consumers […]
